Protecting Your Campsite from Bears

Hiking Longer, Climbing Higher

They are after the smell My camping experience is in black bear areas (See: black bear), but when food and other aromatic substances are involved, even a black bear can cause havoc. I have no advice about confronting a grizzly. Incredibly, bears can smell intriguing odors right through sealed packages; this was not a surprise […]

Exercise is Good for Us

Hiking as a New Activity or at a Later Age

Whenever I come back from a long hike, and especially a climb to a mountain top, my friends are convinced there are drugs at summit because I come back with my spirits soaring. Lately more is being written about exercise and its impact on our brains. I have read that a good workout increases levels […]

Backpacking and Camping

Hiking Longer, Climbing Higher

The next step up from hiking is backpacking, an adventure that blends hiking with backcountry camping. Backpacking broadens horizons to longer and more remote locations for a richer, more immersive outdoor experience. Key distinctions from day hiking are the length of the excursion and the size of your pack. A backpack needs to have life’s […]

This blog has everything you need to know about enjoying the outdoors safely – with or without a dog

As an elder myself, I have been sure to advise from the perspective of outdoor activity later in life.

Topics range from preparing physically, to what kind of equipment is most useful and why to
handling emergencies, weather, wild-animal contact and what to do if you get lost.

I give pointers from my years of experience in all kinds of conditions about thunderstorms, off-
roading to trailheads, dehydration, nutrition and altitude issues for those heading to the hills.

And I will provide specific info for those of you who take along your best friend, your dog.
