How Difficult is that Mountain to Climb?

Hiking Longer, Climbing Higher

Is it a hike? Is it scary? Is it tougher further up where you can’t see? Thinking of heading into the mountains for a great outdoor challenge? My experience is in the Rocky Mountains where most of the very high mountains in the continental U.S. are, the highest of which are over 14,000 feet called […]

“Leaves of Three, Let it Be” and Other Important Plant Knowledge for Hikes

Hiking as a New Activity or at a Later Age

Unless you have an expert with you on a hike, my recommendation is to stay away from eating anything you find on the trail. When it comes to poisonous plants, don’t even touch them. Poison Oak and Poison Ivy These plants contain oils that when rubbed onto the skin can cause an intensely itchy or […]

How to Stay in Your Tent All Night, Despite “the call of nature”

Hiking Longer, Climbing Higher

I have been espousing how much camping adds to the outdoor experience. However, there is one aspect of camping that is never fun, which is waking up in the middle of the night with the need to relieve oneself. There is no way to candy coat having to climb out of a comfy sleeping bag, […]

On a Hike or Climb: Dog or No Dog?

Taking a Dog Along

A powerful answer from an incredible rescue story The concerns a dog owner should consider before deciding whether to bring their dog on a hike are best illustrated with a true story: Missy the Wonderdog from August 2012.  Missy was a German shepherd/Rottweiler mix weighing in at 112 pounds. Here’s what happened. Missy’s owner and […]

This blog has everything you need to know about enjoying the outdoors safely – with or without a dog

As an elder myself, I have been sure to advise from the perspective of outdoor activity later in life.

Topics range from preparing physically, to what kind of equipment is most useful and why to
handling emergencies, weather, wild-animal contact and what to do if you get lost.

I give pointers from my years of experience in all kinds of conditions about thunderstorms, off-
roading to trailheads, dehydration, nutrition and altitude issues for those heading to the hills.

And I will provide specific info for those of you who take along your best friend, your dog.
